Daniel Adjei is a 55-year-old farmer residing in Konkori with his wife and three children. He followed his parents’ footsteps, who taught him farming from a young age. He stayed in Konkori where the land is especially suited to tomato and cucumber farming, the industry in which Daniel specialises.
There are some major challenges the farmers face. Due to not having an irrigation system, they need to transport water themselves from their homes to the farm to water the crops. This system is not sustainable, however, due to the necessity of constant transportation, they rely heavily on rainfall to water their plantation. On top of this, they do not have enough money to purchase fertilizers for their crops.
Whilst he is grateful with the help in pursuing farming, Daniel still worries about not being well-established enough, as the money he has is not enough to scale his crops. His wife and children are not able to live with him in Konkori, instead living in another town, Accra, as Daniel’s house is not suitable for a family being old and unsafe. He can only see his children during vacation. But Daniel still provides for his family although his income is unstable. At times, his wife will request more money, which he cannot supply due to having fewer crops and, therefore, less income.’
