Water For Schools

Our Mission

To give students access to learning materials to allow them to learn basic reading and math skills and allow many to progress into further education.

The problem
Rural schools in Ghana have problem with access to portable drinking water. The government and various non-profit organization as well as the private-for-profit organization have engaged in providing schools with portable water. Despite these efforts, some rural schools do not have access to portable water but resort to contaminated streams nearby for water. This exposes these students to waterborne disease like bilharzia as reported by the Ghana Health Service annual report.

In the Atwima Kwanwoma District, about 80% of the rural schools do not have access to portable water. Schools that have access to portable water (Hand dug well) serve about 71 -500 and changing a drill hand pump to a mechanized borehole will serve about 2000 – 7000 people, which will help the schools and the community in so many ways.

Discussion with the Education Office and the Planning Department of the Atwima kwanwoma Assembly, the selected schools are the schools that urgently need portable water. These schools drink from a stream which is polluted by the activities of herdsmen in the community. As a result of this the community recorded the highest percentage of 72% of the community with waterborne diseases like typhoid, malaria and Diarrheal diseases. Water born disease still accounts for two of the five leading causes of death in Ghana, malaria and diarrheal diseases with diarrhea still the leading cause of death in under fives.
