Library Project

Our Mission

To give students access to learning materials to allow them to learn basic reading and math skills and allow many to progress into further education.

The problem
The Atwima Nwabiagya Medium Term Development plan (2014-2017) indicated that only 22% of students in the schools in the rural communities pass the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), this is one of the basic requirements for students to continue to the second cycle of education in Ghana. As a result of this fact, about 71% of these students do not make it to the second cycle of education in the country, which is Senior High School. This leads to many families with no work or income and pushing them into severe poverty resulting in hunger, malnutrition, ill health (as they cannot afford basic medicines), child labor and prostitution, high child mortality and much more. In 2023 around 2.99 million people living in Ghana were living in extreme poverty most of these in the rural areas (Statista) Unesco report many of these would be able to life themselves from poverty with basic reading and math skills. One of the major problems is no learning materials to support the schools to educate these children.

The solution
To give students and the wider community access to learning materials to allow them to learn basic reading and math skills and allow many to progress into further education. This can be achieved in two ways to build a new library where no suitable building is already in place including toilet facilities allowing many to have basic sanitation facilities and support young women who when on their menstrual cycle would normally miss school due to no facilities for them to use. With schools that already have a space we can stock these with reading material and make the space suitable.

What we expect to achieve
This project will provide many with the materials they need to gain basic education allowing them to find work and support the family’s reducing poverty, malnutrition, health problems, child labor and high mortality rates. It will also allow many to go on to further education, especially many girls who usually do not have the same access to education. They also act as a community space for many children and the older community providing a safe, sheltered space for them to socialize, improving isolation in many and providing sanitation facilities for many.
